A New Covenant Part 1
A New Covenant - Part 1 “Covenant Confusion”
1. God made a “promissory covenant” with Abraham and his children.
Genesis 12:1 The Lord had said to Abram, Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.
2. We are Abraham’s children through our faith in Christ.
Galatians 3:29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Galatians 3:17 The covenant God made with Abraham could not be canceled 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses.
3. God made a “conditional, temporary agreement” with the nation of Israel.
Deuteronomy 29:1 These are the terms of the covenant the Lord commanded Moses to make with the house of Israel
Deuteronomy 28:1 If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands… All these blessings will come on you… 15 However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands all these curses will come on you and overtake you…
Hebrews 8:13 When God speaks of a "new" covenant, it means he has made the first one obsolete.
4. God promised a new and better covenant would come.
Jeremiah 31:31 "The days are coming," declares the Lord, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of
Israel. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors… 33 "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
Hebrews 8:6 Jesus, our High Priest, whose ministry is far superior to the old priesthood, for he is the one who established for us a far better covenant with God, based on better promises.
5. Jesus established the new covenant with his own body and blood.
1 Corinthians 11:23 The night Jesus was betrayed, he took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."
Hebrews 13:20 May the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, equip you with everything you need to do his will…
