Core Matters – Part 2 “Building Trust Through Empathy”

1.    Empathy is the ability to emotionally connect with others.

Hebrews 4:15 Jesus, our High Priest understands our weaknesses since he faced the same temptations we do, though he never once gave way to them and sinned. LB

·      Integrity is about being whole – unimpaired – integrated core

·      Character is about your make up – capacity – core skills

·      Empathy requires you to be emotionally integrated.

2.    Empathy isn’t required to agree, just understand.

James 3:17 The wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure and full of quiet gentleness. Then it is peace-loving and courteous. It allows discussion and is willing to yield to others; it is full of mercy and good deeds. LB

·      Empathy’s power is a heart not a connection of the will.

3.    Empathy builds a culture of trust, invalidation destroys it.

Matthew 18:12 If a man has a hundred sheep, and one wanders away and is lost.  Won't he leave the ninety-nine and go out into the hills to search for the lost one? 13 And if he finds it, he will rejoice over it more than over the ninety-nine others safe at home!
